Conceived in 2009 as part of Hamburg’s International Building Exhibition, this building has living algae embedded within its Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) exterior skin. The 15-unit apartment building’s exterior is coated on its two sun-facing sides with glass-plated tanks of suspended marine microalgae which generate energy through a biochemical processes. Besides producing electricity, the technology solution helps maintain a pleasant temperature inside the building, dispensing artificial cooling. Result of a project by Arup design firm in partnership with the Autrian architectural firm Splitterwerk, the energy self-sufficient green building cost around €5 million and took about 1 year to finish. It will serve as a pilot plant for tests on renewable energy in urban buildings.
